At Poway Hilltop Preschool, our Ladybug class has something big to celebrate; LITERALLY! Our little gardeners have grown some impressive squash, and their pride is as vibrant as the vegetables they’ve nurtured. This hands-on gardening project has not only brought joy but also provided a rich learning experience, perfectly aligning with our commitment to fostering creativity, independence and a love for learning in our preschoolers!
The Ladybugs’ squash growing adventure began as part of our nature based curriculum, designed to spark curiosity and teach children about the world around them. Through this project, our students explored science and teamwork while getting their hands dirty in the best way possible. From planting seeds to watering and watching their squash grow, the children learned about the life cycle of plants, the importance of patience and the rewards of hard work.
Our teachers guided the Ladybugs through each step, encouraging them to observe changes, measure growth, and discuss their findings. This project wasn’t just about growing squash; it was about growing confidence, problem-solving skills, and a sense of accomplishment! As one parent shared, “The teachers are always engaged with the kids, embracing their needs with open arms.” This nurturing approach shines through in activities like these, where every child’s contribution matters.
Gardening is more than a fun activity; it’s a powerful educational tool. At Poway Hilltop Preschool, we integrate hands-on projects like this into our curriculum to support kindergarten readiness. The Ladybugs practiced fine motor skills while planting seeds, developed language skills by describing their plants’ progress, and honed math skills by counting leaves and measuring squash. Plus, they learned about responsibility and teamwork by taking turns caring for their garden.
This project also fosters social-emotional growth. Watching their squash thrive gave the Ladybugs a sense of pride and ownership. As one reviewer noted, “Over the past few months, I’ve seen remarkable growth in my son, especially in his social-emotional skills, speech development, and confidence.” These moments of achievement help build the self-esteem that’s so crucial during the preschool years.
We shared the Ladybugs’ squash success on our recent Facebook post, and the excitement is contagious! Our monthly newsletters and photo updates keep parents connected to these milestones, and we love seeing families celebrate their children’s growth alongside us.
